Understanding Your Acid Reflux Better
is no single cause for acid reflux. In most cases there are more than one cause
that results in acid reflux. In some person, the cause of acid reflux is the excess
production of the acid, but this is very rare.
There are certain common factors that lead to acid reflux. They are lower esophagus muscle strength, the stomach emptying, hiatal hernias and improper contractions of the intestine.
As far as the acid reflux is concerned, the sphincter of the lower esophagus is the most important organ. This sphincter is responsible for the passage of food to the stomach from the esophagus.
While doing so this sphincter blocks the acid reflux too. In case the muscle of the sphincter is weak, there will be increased acid reflux which is due to abnormal relaxation and very weak contraction.
In case of weakened contractions, the lower esophagus sphincter doesnt prevent the acid reflux from occurring. In the same way the abnormal relaxation of the lower esophagus sphincter too calls for the acid reflux to follow.
This is because the sphincter remains open for longer time than required. Both these abnormalities do arise because of the weakened muscles of the esophagus and both the abnormalities result in acid reflux.
Hiatus hernias are the other important factor that results in acid reflux. Though the reason for the development of hiatus hernias are not understood properly, the effect of the hiatus hernias are very well understood.
In patients who are suffering from hiatus hernias, a portion of the stomach will be locked in the opening of the diaphragm. Diaphragm is the membrane that separates the chest from the abdomen.
Diaphragm is the key factor in controlling the acid reflux along with the lower oesophagus sphincter. In hiatus hernias, the diaphragm is disturbed to perform its normal duty of controlling the reflux.
As discussed, there will be portion of stomach struck to the diaphragm, in case of hiatus hernias. This means the acid can be trapped in that portion of the stomach which results in increased acid reflux.
The oesophagus and its condition are very important for the digestion. The main function of the oesophagus is to push the food to the stomach where the major portion of digestion occurs.
For the effective pushing of the food to happen, the strength of the oesophagus muscles is very important. In case the contractions of the oesophagus are found to be defective, then travel of the food in the oesophagus is hampered.
The muscle weakness of the oesophagus could be due to various reasons and the most common factor is smoking habit of the person. Smoking results in trapping of acid in the oesophagus for more than 5-6 hours.
There are so many other causes than those discussed here for acid reflux. The patients will have burning sensation because of the excess acid produced.
sufferers will be obviously at discomfort. It is better to consult a physician
as early as possible. The physician will assess the cause of the acid reflux and
suggest the ways and means to solve the problem once for all by removing the root
cause of the problem.
